Swimming Pool Disinfectant: Chlorine Dioxide

Yes, chlorine dioxide is safe and effective for swimming pool disinfection when used according to product guidelines. It is a BPR-compliant biocide approved for PT2 (public area disinfection) applications including pools and spas.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) works differently from free chlorine. It forms no chloramines, is active across a broad pH range and can act on biofilm. Efficacy against Legionella or Pseudomonas depends on the product, concentration, contact time and test or operating conditions.

Labelled chlorine dioxide products can be used in hot tubs and spas. Higher water temperatures can promote biofilm growth, so treatment must form part of a validated operating and monitoring programme.
