What Is Biofilm?

Biofilm is a surface-associated community of microorganisms embedded in a self-produced matrix. It can develop on wetted surfaces where conditions support attachment and growth.

Biofilm is not simply loose material in water. Cells attach to a surface, grow and produce matrix material that changes how the community interacts with its environment.
Its significance depends on the system: a biofilm may affect hygiene, corrosion, heat transfer, flow or the persistence of organisms of concern.
Why management is contextual
Water chemistry, nutrient availability, surface condition, temperature, flow and cleaning history all affect biofilm. Assessment should therefore be specific to the system and its risk assessment.
Evidence and uncertainty
Published biofilm studies are valuable for understanding mechanisms, but their conditions may not match a particular installation. Species, surfaces, deposits and operating conditions should be recorded when interpreting evidence.
