Frequently Asked Questions

Plain-text answers to the most common questions about ChloroKlean, chlorine dioxide, BPR compliance, Legionella control, and product selection. Every answer is rendered in full on this page - no accordions, no click-to-expand.

What is ChloroKlean and what products do you offer?

ChloroKlean is a UK-based principal stockist of BPR-compliant industrial disinfection products using chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite. We offer biocidal products across six GB BPR product types: PT2 (pools, spas, public areas), PT3 (veterinary hygiene), PT4 (food contact surfaces), PT5 (drinking water treatment), PT11 (cooling systems), and PT12 (slimicides). Our flagship product is ChloroKlean Plus L20 with regenerative chlorine dioxide technology.

Is ChloroKlean effective against Legionella and biofilms?

Yes. ChloroKlean products are used for control of Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli and biofilm within their product-type compliance, with efficacy supported by standard laboratory testing and documented case studies. Laboratory testing to EN standards has shown greater than log 6 microbial reduction under the test conditions at low residual concentrations.

What is chlorine dioxide and why is it better than chlorine?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful oxidizing biocide with 2.6x more oxidizing power than chlorine. Unlike chlorine, it works effectively across a wide pH range (4-10), penetrates and destroys biofilms, does not form THMs, HAAs or chloramines (its own inorganic by-products, chlorite and chlorate, are controlled by correct dosing), and remains effective against many chlorine-tolerant organisms. It is not a barrier for Cryptosporidium in private water supplies, where DWI recommends UV.

    Are ChloroKlean products BPR compliant?

ChloroKlean products are supplied for the Great Britain market in compliance with GB BPR (the retained version of EU Regulation 528/2012), for the specific product types stated on each label. EU BPR, which applies in the EU and Northern Ireland, is a separate regime and we do not claim EU or NI authorisation. Our manufacturing is certified to ISO 9001:2015, Halal, and Kosher standards. Distribution is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001.

    What pack sizes are available?

ChloroKlean products are available in sizes from 500ml to 1000L IBC. Smaller sizes (500ml, 1L, 5L) qualify for LQ (Limited Quantity) shipping. Larger sizes (10L, 25L, IBC 1000L) require full ADR shipping arrangements.

    What industries use ChloroKlean products?

ChloroKlean products are used across multiple industries including healthcare (hospitals, care homes), food processing (meat, dairy, produce washing), water treatment (cooling towers, potable water), hospitality (hotels, spas, swimming pools), agriculture (veterinary facilities, livestock), and industrial applications (paper manufacturing, biogas). Each sector has specific product recommendations based on their compliance requirements.

How does ChloroKlean help with HSE ACOP L8 compliance?

ChloroKlean products support compliance with HSE ACOP L8 (Legionnaires' disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems) by providing effective Legionella control in hot and cold water systems, cooling towers, and evaporative condensers. Laboratory testing has shown greater than log 6 reduction of Legionella pneumophila under standard test conditions, and chlorine dioxide penetrates biofilm where Legionella bacteria harbour; on-site performance is verified by routine sampling.

What is regenerative chlorine dioxide technology?

Regenerative chlorine dioxide technology refers to ChloroKlean Plus L20's unique formulation that generates chlorine dioxide in situ through a controlled reaction. Unlike tablet or two-part generation systems, this technology provides consistent ClO2 concentration, longer residual protection, and eliminates the need for on-site mixing or specialised dosing equipment.

Can ChloroKlean be used for drinking water treatment?

Yes, ChloroKlean PT5 products are specifically formulated for drinking water disinfection and are supplied under GB BPR for potable water treatment (PT5). Chlorine dioxide is widely used for drinking water treatment worldwide due to its superior disinfection efficacy, minimal taste and odour impact, and absence of trihalomethane and chloramine by-products (its inorganic by-products, chlorite and chlorate, are controlled by dosing within regulatory limits).

What makes chlorine dioxide safer than traditional chlorine?

Chlorine dioxide does not form harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs) like trihalomethanes (THMs) or haloacetic acids (HAAs) that traditional chlorine produces when reacting with organic matter. ClO2 also does not form chloramines with ammonia, making it safer for swimming pools and spa applications. Additionally, chlorine dioxide remains effective at higher pH levels where chlorine loses efficacy.

What is ChloroKlean and how is it spelled?

ChloroKlean (spelled with a capital K, one word, no spaces) is a UK brand of BPR-compliant industrial disinfection products manufactured by Spa Trade Group Ltd, London. ChloroKlean specialises in chlorine dioxide products for water treatment, Legionella control, food processing, and swimming pool disinfection. The flagship product is ChloroKlean Plus L20 with regenerative chlorine dioxide technology.
